ESR World Journalism Prize
The Social and Environmental Responsibility world journalism prize was set up to reward the best articles on social and environmental responsibility published around the world.
Every year three prizes are awarded by the World Forum Lille in partnership with the “World Editors Forum” (association of chief editors, representing more than 18 000 publications around the world).

Social and Environmental Responsibility Prize
Winner : Valérie BORDE (Canada)
« L’Actualité », 15th october 2006 which title is : « Quand vert rime avec affaires ».
Borde's article described the rise in green-friendly companies. Nowadays, many companies are churning decent profits, while not only respecting the environment, but even thanks to these eco-friendly policies.

Prize specifically dedicated to the press in developing countries
Winner : Patrick MAYOYO (Kenya), « The East African », 2nd march 2007 which title is : « Lamu oil drilling worries marine bodies ».
In the wake of this well-written, solidly researched journalistic piece, as well as a campaign against oil drilling in Lamu, a committee is investigating the environmental impact of the oil drilling operations, which were jeopardizing the ocean's ecosystem.

Diversity and equal opportunity special prize
Winner : SAVAD RAHMAN (India)
« Madhayman Daily », 15th october 2006 which title is :« Bant Singh The Lion of Mansa ».
This much more militant piece was a feature article about Bant Singh, who put up a heroic - and blood-stained - fight against the judiciary system, after his daughter was raped - an oft unpunished crime.

Social and Environmental Responsibility World Journalism Prize 2008: How to apply?
The 3 Prizes for 2008
• The Prize for the best article on the yearly theme selected by the World Forum Lille,
• The jury special Prize attributed to an article published on the yearly theme among the press of a developing country,
• And a Prize awarded to a general information newspaper for its editorial policy in favour of Sustainable Development and Responsible Economy.
Yearly theme for 2008 :
“A responsible economy to feed and protect the Earth”
Articles and newspapers that are likely to be awarded in 2008 will have to demonstrate how economic actors (especially firms) implement actions allowing to satisfy the vital needs of the worldwide population while improving and preserving the environment:
> Towards the increasing demands (in function of demographic and economic growth)
> Regarding present and future resources (especially water and energy).
Articles published between 1st September 2007 and 30th June 2008 can be submitted for the competition.
The articles must be registered on the World Forum website, in the Register my article section before June 30th 2008.
The articles must be accompanied with information on:
• Their author(s) (name, date and place of birth, address, nationality…),
• The newspaper(s) in which they have been published, mentioning: title, country/area of diffusion, type of edition (paper or digital)…
The articles are submitted in their original language, nevertheless, exceptionally, the organizers can ask the applicant to provide them with a translation of the article in English or in French.
For the Prize concerning a general information newspaper, we wish to receive a cover letter from the chief editor, showing – with quantitative and qualitative criteria – in what extent the editorial policy of the newspaper is definitely in favour of Sustainable Development and Responsible Economy.
The prize-winners (authors of the articles for the first two prizes and, for the newspaper awarded, the chief editor or his/her representative) will be personally informed at the beginning of September. They will receive their prize (Trophy and bank note of €1 000) in Lille the 9th October 2008. Their transport and accommodation fees will be taken in charge by the World Forum Lille.
Besides, the prize-winners will be invited to participate in a workshop within the framework of the International Meeting, on October 10th 2008, about “Involvement of the economic actors in favour of the environment: attitude and role of the media”.
