Best Practices to enhance and improve client’s interests in banking activities.
Since they are at the heart of the flow of money, banks have to meet transparency and responsibility requirements more than companies in any other sector. It is therefore legitimate for the public to expect them to provide information not only about their practices but also the activities that they finance.
The Institute for International Finance (IIF), a global association of 380 major world banks, was particularly concerned about risk management during the years of financial euphoria. The system whereby banks had to fully bear their credit risks has "diversified" to a model whereby these risks are transferred, and outsourced through securitisation. Consequently, credit risk has been massively underestimated over the last few years. Besides credit risk, the Institute for International Finance extends its recommendations to directors’ remuneration, liquidity risk management, valuation of assets held and, more generally, transparency (service charges, sales commission).
